” Darius, the eldest [of Dave Brubeck’s sons] and most visually like his father, plays stylish piano and knows the score. ” – Jack Massarik, Evening Standard.
“ the combination of Brubeck & O’Higgins is certainly among the best piano/sax partnerships in the UK.” – Jazzwise Mag, 2015.
The DARIUS BRUBECK QUARTET celebrated a decade together when they launched their latest cd, “YEARS AGO” at Ronnie Scotts earlier this year. Darius, the eldest son of the late, great Dave Brubeck, is a noted jazz pianist, composer, educator and band-leader in his own right and appears here leading his brilliant quartet featuring long-running collaborator and peerless saxophonist Dave O’Higgins.
“A stunning player in the neo-bop vein, with an apparently effortless flow of coherent ideas, beautiful time and a highly developed harmonic sense.” JAZZ GUIDE
This quartet, which began in London, plays a mixture of Dave Brubeck hits, South African jazz, original music, and jazz standards. All delivered with panache and swing from one of the finest quartets in the business. Darius is interested in music from several traditions; the direct emotion of South African jazz, the improvisation and rhythm of Asian music and the lyricism and harmony of the European tradition.
TheQuartet have recently thrilled audiences at sell-out concerts from Cheltenham, Cork, Swansea to Glasgow Jazz Festivals. We are delighted to welcome them to Brecon for what is their first visit. Each member of the group is deservedly featured and the group dynamic continues to grow. Darius informative comments between numbers bring the audience closer to the music. This experienced group always delivers. No one re
members a performance that didn’t end with a standing ovation.
Darius and his wife/manager Catherine return to South Africa every year where he retains an honorary artist-in-residence status at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and they are writing a book about their jazz life in South Africa
